What is the CauseShopper™ Directory
and how do I use it?
The CauseShopper™ Directory is a unique
resource to help cause-minded shoppers locate and purchase from
businesses that give generously to charity. The result is an entirely
new revenue stream for charities that need sources of ongoing donations.
It also empowers the average consumer with a new way to support charity,
and to realize their unlimited potential to make the world a better
place.
A pleasant discovery we have made about
this process is that it changes the fundamental nature of many business
relationships to one of partnership and good will. Businesses and
shoppers connect in a much more meaningful way, as partners in an effort
to change the world. The businesses receive new and loyal customers, and
shoppers gain access to new and often exceptional products and services
from providers who often go above-and-beyond the standards of quality
and customer service.
Why did you select the 10%-to-charity
minimum?
The definition of “generous” for
purposes of the Directory is at least 10%, although we applaud all
charitable activities. This is the number we have used in order to
create the “partnership” relationship between businesses, shoppers,
and charities. We want it to be rewarding for everyone involved, yet
still be fairly easy to implement. We think the long-term financial
returns for businesses that give at this level more than compensates for
the initial gifts. The feedback we have received from business owners
has
confirmed this. Another benefit is the sense of satisfaction experienced
by business owners and staff. For many, operating an efficient and
profitable business that provides high-quality products and supports
charity becomes their cause.
Where did the idea of the
CauseShopper™ Directory come from?
The idea for the CauseShopper™
Directory came from small business owner, John M. Huff. Mr. Huff
explored the concept of business and community partnerships for several
years, and was particularly fascinated with the idea of using business
and entrepreneurial efforts to support charity. After reading several
books on the subject including Marc Allen’s “The Ten Percent Solution,”
he searched for a list of companies that donate at least ten percent of
their profits to charity. He wanted to find examples of other companies
that had implemented these ideas, both to learn from them and to support
them through regular purchases. When he didn't find the list,
CauseShopper™ was born.
Are listings free?
The CauseShopper™
Directory operates as a for profit business like the others listed in
the Directory. The cost of operating and maintaining the website, and
promoting the Directory for the benefit of everyone involved is time and
resource-consuming. Revenues are currently generated through nominal
listing fees. See our
Listing page for more information.
What are your plans for the future?
We plan to expand the CauseShopper
Directory™ in membership and functionality, adding more
search capabilities and shopping features. We also plan to expand the
resources area
to help existing businesses and entrepreneurs who are considering the
business-for-charity model.
Can you recommend any books or other
resources about the business-for-charity concept?
Yes! Please see our
resources page.
What about the other good business
practices like sustainable manufacturing, fair
trade, and organic foods and products?
We applaud all efforts by business to
work in partnership with the community and environment. Our service
exists to provide a new option to support charity, but we recognize that
good business must also incorporate other practices that respect the
health and support the growth of employees, customers, the community and
the environment.
